This post has been a long time coming – I absolutely adored this book! I wanted to do a full review of it for a while but never quite had the time but now that book two is releasing I thought now was perfect to create some hype and show some love for the first book!
Before we get into the review, let’s talk about the book! The Calling by L. C. Pye is a Dystopian Fantasy set in Landore: a place separated into five callings which keep the people in segregation. Creating a discord and isolation between each faction.
The story follows the main character, Talia Caffrey, who believes that choosing her calling is her only chance to belong within a society which has already rejected her. Labeling her as an outcast. Unwanted to all except one: Jules. Her best friend who makes her feel like she belongs. So when Talia’s calling approaches and Jules is kidnapped. Talia must leave behind everything she knows to save her best friend. Nothing is so simple for her though – as this journey introduces her to seven strangers who challenge everything she has ever known.
Will Talia find and save her friend? Will she be able to return to the home that has already rejected her once? Will she ever be called to a place she belongs?
What first pulled me in was the cover, as I already know the cover artist and it’s just so eye catching, but when I read the blurb I was sold.
The Calling is honestly extraordinary and if I could I’d give it a 10/5 stars on Goodreads! I don’t praise a whole lot of books like this and this book is deserving of it! I was shocked to discover this was her debut novel!
The level of creativity and vivid style in her writing pulled me into this other world and held me there from beginning to end! And the combat scenes really had me on the edge of my sweet. They are written like a dance, and she handles the different styles of fighting very well.
I love the point of view of Talia, she was relatable and very believable as the main character. Every character has a very in-depth personality though! and I never once felt confused about who was who. Not to mention, I love the found family trope in this book!
The book is a little fast towards the end, but that really helps with added tension towards the ending. Overall, I honestly loved this book. It helped me out of a reading slump and it’s just absolutely enchanting!
As of today – the second book in the series is out! So if you haven’t already, be sure to go read The Calling. Happy release day to L. C. Pye!
